{"id":193,"date":"2012-04-16T20:46:00","date_gmt":"2012-04-17T01:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.messy-spirituality.com\/wordpress\/2012\/04\/16\/trail-of-tears\/"},"modified":"2012-05-01T10:39:30","modified_gmt":"2012-05-01T15:39:30","slug":"trail-of-tears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.messy-spirituality.com\/wordpress\/2012\/04\/16\/trail-of-tears\/","title":{"rendered":"Trail of Tears"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: left;\" dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">One of our greatest loss of life in America was due to a forced marched of the Cherokee Indians to\u00a0Oklahoma. \u00a0Yes, this was based upon a treaty signed by the Cherokee. \u00a0However, I do not believe anyone of sound mind can\u00a0reasonably\u00a0justify that this treaty was signed in good faith by the U.S. Government nor was it in any way\u00a0equable\u00a0to all parties in any way shape, way or form.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<object style=\"clear: left; float: left;\" width=\"320\" height=\"266\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/W2VtHtTrkVA&amp;fs=1&amp;source=uds\" \/><\/object><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">I listened to a letter by Ralph Waldo Emerson\u00a0condemning\u00a0the action of the United States. \u00a0Please see video to left. \u00a0Please also see this link for a wealth of information on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cherokee.org\/AboutTheNation\/History\/TrailOfTears\/Default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Trail of Tears<\/a>. \u00a0What is past is past but what is past has greatly effected those of the past, present and future. \u00a0 The American Indians were often the target of unjust actions that greatly effected their lives. \u00a0Some of these actions were unintentional but many were were intentional. \u00a0The letter was read and recorded and posted on YouTube. \u00a0What really saddens me are the comments to this letter. \u00a0The ignorance is really hurtful to this loss. \u00a0I am very surprised by the hateful comments and the bold lies that are told to justify the move on the part of the United States. \u00a0Maybe this is a\u00a0symptom\u00a0of poor history instruction in our schools. \u00a0Maybe it is just pure denial that our government could hurt people so badly.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">The actions have had repressive effects to the Cherokees even today. \u00a0Many things the United States did has repressive effects today to all American Indians. \u00a0The loss is staggering in so many ways. \u00a0I looked up employment information for Native Americans as a whole, and it is astounding:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Below is what I found at:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.inthesetimes.com\/working\/entry\/6801\/the_state_of_native_america_very_unemployed_and_mostly_ignored\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.inthesetimes.com\/working\/entry\/6801\/the_state_of_native_america_very_unemployed_and_mostly_ignored\/<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Austin\u2019s report, based on statistics from <\/span><a style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/cps\/\" target=\"_blank\">Current Population Survey<\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"> (CPS) data, uses the total American Indian and Alaska Native population, including biracial individuals. Here are his research&#8217;s key findings:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">By the first half of 2010, the unemployment rate for Alaska Natives jumped 6.3 percentage points to 21.3%\u2014the highest regional unemployment rate for American Indians.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Since the start of the recession, American Indians in the Midwest experienced the greatest increase in unemployment, growing by 10.3 percentage points to 19.3%.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">By the first half of this year, slightly more than half\u201451.5%\u2014of American Indians nationally were working, down from 58.3% in the first half of 2007.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">In the first half of this year, only 44% of American Indians in the Northern Plains were working, the worst employment rate for Native Americans regionally.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">The employment situation is the worst for American Indians in some of the same regions where it is best for whites: Alaska and the Northern Plains.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Some of the comments from YouTube just struck me directly in my chest and I became very upset. \u00a0Below I am posting some of these comments:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Hitler was a hero to some. Germany and Japan were our enemies and Russia was our ally in the 1940&#8217;s. In the 1950&#8217;s Germany and Japan were our allies and Russia was our enemy. in the 1980&#8217;s the Taliban were our allies and Osama Bin Laden our friend and a great tactician. In 2000, they were our enemies and Bin Laden was a terrorist for doing the same things. History is hypocrisy and history rewritten to fit agenda. Indians were nothing but savages and unworthy of glorification.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: red; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">goldcoastlawyer\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Another White guilt video. Let&#8217;s ignore that the Indians GREED to move. They had a choice\u2026 they made it. Why do these people now try to blame White people for their choice? When hearing out, or reading history, and if you feel guilt because of it, then, its because you&#8217;re weak minded and ignorant&#8230; Most Natives did not have a choice and still don&#8217;t in certain &#8220;Latin&#8221; American countries. He&#8217;s a racist scumbag piece of shit. Fuck him. You might as well say &#8220;Hitler wasn&#8217;t a bad guy, just check out the paintings he did. In fact, recent findings indicate that Europeans were here before the Asians which we later termed &#8220;Indians&#8221;. The vast majority of indians integrated with the rest of us and only a tiny percentage of them chose to live on reservations and have their own &#8220;nation&#8221;. That was generous.
