Yesterday I visited Lakota College on the Rez. (Reservation). \u00a0The group and I were given an audio history of the Lakota Indians,\u00a0accompanied\u00a0by photographs on the wall of the cultural center. \u00a0While listening to the history, feelings began to stir inside of me. \u00a0I found myself ashamed of my government, angry, hurt, and a\u00a0myriad\u00a0of other emotions just swirling around. \u00a0Hearing history from the eyes of those who participated in the history is the best way, not from outsider. \u00a0Most of us have heard the idea of, “History is written by the victors”. \u00a0Let me also add to that, it is written by the\u00a0oppressors\u00a0who continue to\u00a0oppress, the ignorant, the hurtful and the powerful.<\/p>\n

The Lakota’s are part of the the\u00a0Sioux, which is comprised of;\u00a0Lakota<\/em>, Santee, Yankton, and Yanktonai. \u00a0For more information on the Lakota, please go see their web site at: \u00a0http:\/\/www.republicoflakotah.com<\/a><\/p>\n

The U.S. government has systematically taken advantage of all the Native Americans.<\/p>\n

Suicide runs rampant among the Lakota<\/p><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

They have abused, attempted genocide<\/a>\u00a0(see the link for more info), cheated, stole from and in so many numerous ways hurt and continue to hurt the Indian Nations. \u00a0Here is a link to a video about the genocide of Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. <\/a>\u00a0The\u00a0government of the Unites States in 2009\u00a0buried\u00a0in a spending bill, a half-hearted, week and meaningless apology to the Native Americans. \u00a0See Wall Street\u00a0Journal<\/a>, NPR<\/a>\u00a0and Native American Times.<\/a><\/p>\n

While talking to some of the Indians on the Pine Ridge\u00a0Reservation\u00a0 there has been a feeling that the government, through the BIA\u00a0Bureau\u00a0of Indian Affairs<\/a> has and continues to be ineffective and inept with regards to anything it does to, with and for the Indians. \u00a0Here is some background information, NOT from the government about the BIA.<\/a><\/p>\n

When I was\u00a0writing\u00a0this post, I became as\u00a0agitated\u00a0as I was when I listened to the history yesterday. \u00a0However, through some mishap while\u00a0writing\u00a0 I lost my work. \u00a0I am thankful for that now, since it has allowed me write this with less of the emotions as previously.<\/p>\n

I encourage all of you to look for history of the American Indians, written by American Indians. \u00a0Get another perspective other than what has been pushed down by the U.S. Government. \u00a0Also, look for books written by American Indians to get glimpses of what past and present Indian life looks like.\"Picture2\"<\/a><\/p>\n
