font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;\">As we wait in anticipation of the Christmas season, we look to what we have been told happened over 2,000 years ago.\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">A reading from Luke 2:13-15<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none;\"><sup><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">13<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">suddenly\u00a0a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">14\u00a0<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">\u201cGloryto God in the highest heaven, <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 1.0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none; text-indent: -.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.\u201d <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, \u201cLet\u2019s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.<a title=\"\" name=\"_ftnref1\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Dougd\/Dropbox\/Documents\/Tlc\/Sermons\/Peace%20-%20Concordance.doc#_ftn1\"><\/a><sup><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><sup><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;\">[1]<\/span><\/sup><!--[endif]--><\/sup><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">Even during the years prior to the birth of Jesus, the birth was foretold as well as the peace being foretold.\u00a0 It says in Isaiah 9:6<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 48.0pt; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: right 10.0pt left 20.0pt; text-autospace: none; text-indent: -48.0pt;\"><strong><sup><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">6\u00a0<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\"> For to us a child is born, <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 48.0pt; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none; text-indent: -16.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">Micah 5:4-5<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 48.0pt; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: right 10.0pt left 20.0pt; text-autospace: none; text-indent: -48.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the <span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">Lord<\/span>, <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">I have had to pleasure of experiencing both stress and peace.\u00a0 The peace of the Lord has been presented to me while in the midst of stress.\u00a0 The stress is most often created by myself,when not trusting in what God has planned for me.\u00a0 We are never promised a stress free life nor an easy life.\u00a0 As Pastor Ben mentioned last week, God works all things for the good.\u00a0This does not mean however that short term results will bepainless\u2026\u2026\u2026but in the end it is for the good.\u00a0Turmoil, pain, stress, loss, grief are all part of this world.\u00a0 At the same time, so is peace, joy, strength and comfort.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.25in; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0.25in;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.25in; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0.25in;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.25in; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0.25in;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">An Old Poem says;<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-align: center; text-autospace: none;\" align=\"center\"><em><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">In the center of the whirlpool, while the waters rush around,<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-align: center; text-autospace: none;\" align=\"center\"><em><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">There\u2019s a space of perfect stillness, though with turmoil it is bound;<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%; line-height: 115%;\">[4]<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><!--[endif]--><\/sup><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">I was speaking to a friend about peace and calm and was relating this to when Jesus calms the storms as Jesus and the Apostles cross the sea.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">Matthew 8:25-26<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><strong><sup><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">25\u00a0<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">And they went and woke him <em>(Jesus),<\/em>saying, \u201cSave us, Lord; we are perishing.\u201d <strong><sup>26\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>And he said to them, \u201cWhy are you afraid, O you of little faith?\u201d Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. <a title=\"\" name=\"_ftnref5\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Dougd\/Dropbox\/Documents\/Tlc\/Sermons\/Peace%20-%20Concordance.doc#_ftn5\"><\/a><sup><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><sup><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;\">[5]<\/span><\/sup><!--[endif]--><\/sup><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">Even when I was relating this story back to my friend, I recall picturing a painting that we were shown during our first Advent service this year.\u00a0Warner Sallman\u2019s \u201cChrist our Pilot\u201d\u2026\u2026.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><a style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-_gmLV6-jxys\/TvbVqVuW0QI\/AAAAAAAAAhs\/nVgGPR9A2nw\/s1600\/Jesus%2BChrist%2Bour%2Bpilot%2Bb.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-_gmLV6-jxys\/TvbVqVuW0QI\/AAAAAAAAAhs\/nVgGPR9A2nw\/s320\/Jesus%2BChrist%2Bour%2Bpilot%2Bb.jpg?resize=260%2C320\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Traditionally we might think of Jesus calming the Storm, making things peaceful all around us. However in this painting, Jesus has not calmed the storm but is guiding the person steering the boat.\u00a0 We are in control of our decisions but Jesus is there to help guide us.\u00a0 My friend Julane says that her husband, Tim, often says; sometimes Jesus calms the storm\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026.. but sometimes\u2026\u2026 Jesus calms the captain.<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">Where do we receive our peace from?\u00a0 Each of us is different in so many ways.\u00a0 What one person receives as peace\u00a0may be stressful to another.\u00a0 At the same time, we are always growing and what we receive as peace today is not necessarily what will be peaceful to us later.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">God is the peace in wisdom of the Father.\u00a0 God the father has given commandments to be followed.\u00a0 In following those wise commandments peace can be found for some.<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Jesus is the peace from the guidance of him as a compass, always pointing us to North.\u00a0 We can follow the path using the Jesus as the compass in asking, What Would Jesus Do?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">The Spirit is peace that surrounds us in uncertain times. When everything is all stirring around us, the Spirit calms us and can gives us peace inside.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">Peace as inserted in the Gospel reading today, just doesn\u2019t do full justice to what God is having the angels tell the shepherds.\u00a0 In the Greek,we can translate this using a couple of other words, in place of peace.\u00a0 These I believe give a much more robust meaning to what is being conveyed. <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">Harmony can be used in place of peace.\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 48.0pt; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 12.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: right 10.0pt left 20.0pt; text-autospace: none; text-indent: -48.0pt;\"><strong><sup><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">14\u00a0<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cGlory to God in the highest, <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 48.0pt; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none; text-indent: -16.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">and on earth <em>harmony<\/em> among those with whom he is pleased!\u201d <a title=\"\" name=\"_ftnref6\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Dougd\/Dropbox\/Documents\/Tlc\/Sermons\/Peace%20-%20Concordance.doc#_ftn6\"><\/a><sup><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><sup><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">This conveys a much better meaning but even at that, this still does not fully convey what I believed is said here.\u00a0 A little more wordy but better yet is; <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\">Some of you may have heard of, the Book of Concord, which contains the foundations core to our Lutheran beliefs.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">What can we do to obtain this peace?\u00a0 Be aware of who we are in relation to God.\u00a0 Be open to God the Father in the Father\u2019s wisdom.\u00a0 Askourselves\u2026\u2026.What Would Jesus Do?\u00a0 Always be open to the Holy Spirit both in calm and in those turbulent times.\u00a0 The Spirit will provide peace even in the midst of the storm. We must always be prepared to receive God\u2019s peace.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">Here in this congregation, we share the peace with each other, every Sunday.\u00a0 We can be used by the Spirit to be God\u2019sagents in Christ to be peace givers to all of the world, not just here in these four walls.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">Norm Stevens was one of those people that gave peace to all those that he sounded.\u00a0 The same goes for Pat.\u00a0 Each were at peace with who they were and were not afraid to share that peace with others.\u00a0 They accepted whatever came at them, always knowing that the Spirit was there to be with them in the storms.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;\">Let me leave you today with this story:<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">Can you sleep when the wind blows?<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">Years ago, a farmer owned land along the Atlantic seacoast. He constantly advertised for hired hands. Most people were reluctant to work on farms along the Atlantic. They dreaded the awful storms that raged across the Atlantic,wreaking havoc on the buildings and crops.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">As the farmer interviewed applicants for the job, he received a steady stream of refusals.<\/span><\/span>Finally, a short, thin man, well past middle age, approached the farmer.&#8221;Are you a good farm hand?&#8221; the farmer asked him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8220;Well,I can sleep when the wind blows,&#8221; answered the little man.<br \/>\nAlthough puzzled by this answer, the farmer, desperate for help, Hired him. The little man worked well around the farm, busy from dawn to dusk,\u00a0and the farmer felt satisfied with the man&#8217;s work.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">Then one night the wind howled loudly in from offshore. Jumping out of bed, the farmer grabbed a lantern and rushed next door to the hired hand&#8217;s sleeping quarters. He shook the little man and yelled, &#8220;Get up!\u00a0 A storm is coming! Tie things down before they blow away!&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">The little man rolled over in bed and said firmly, &#8220;No sir. I told you, I can sleep when the wind blows.&#8221;<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">Enraged by the response, the farmer was tempted to fire him on the spot.Instead, he hurried outside to prepare for the storm. To his amazement, he discovered that all of the haystacks had been covered with tarps. The cows were in the barn, the chickens were in the coops, and the doors were barred. The shutters were tightly secured.\u00a0 Everything was tied down.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">Nothing could blow away. The farmer then understood what his hired hand meant, so he returned to his bed to also sleep while the wind blew.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">When you&#8217;re prepared, spiritually, mentally, and physically, you have nothing to fear. Can you sleep when the wind blows through your life?<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">The hired hand in the story was able to sleep because he had secured the farm against the storm.
